About the Website

Welcome to TobaccoSmoke.Org

This website is dedicated to providing the public with accurate scientific information on exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke. The focus is on scientific assessments of indoor, outdoor & in-vehicle air pollution levels caused by the smoking of tobacco.

Knowledge of the levels of exposure to air pollutants in secondhand smoke is critically important for determining the health effects that may result from exposure and, especially, for identifying ways to reduce or eliminate that exposure.

This website is managed by a group of research scentists who study human exposure to environmental pollutants with many years of experience studying exposure to secondhand smoke. The aim of this site is to provide the general public with accurate and complete scientific information on:

1. The nature of secondhand tobacco smoke
2. The degree of secondhand tobacco smoke exposure that can occur in different situations
3. Environmental or behavioral factors that influence exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke

As the site grows, we will be adding more material and allow for feedback from visitors.

This web site was created by four research scientists, who are experts in secondhand smoke. Please see the list below and also follow the links on the sidebar for more information on the website contributors.

We started this website to help educate the public.
TobaccoSmoke.Org is not affiliated with any particular university or industry group. Instead, we scientists created this site on our personal time, and we are entirely responsible for its contents. Our goal is to present the scientific story of exposure to secondhand smoke as accurately and completely as possible.

Wayne R. Ott
Dr. Ott is consulting professor at Stanford University and a former USEPA scientist with over 40 years of experience in studying exposure to airborne pollutants. Dr. Ott was an original pioneer of the field of exposure analysis.

Neil E. Klepeis
Dr. Klepeis is a consulting assistant professor at Stanford University and has been studying exposure to secondhand smoke for over 14 years. He has published significant work in monitoring and modeling secondhand smoke exposure.

James L. Repace
Mr. Repace published the first scientific articles on indoor air pollution caused by secondhand tobacco smoke. He is an internationally-recognized expert and consultant in secondhand smoke exposure and risk.

Lance A. Wallace
Dr. Wallace, a retired scientist formerly with the USEPA, is widely-published in the field of exposure. He helped pioneer this field while an employee of the USEPA for over 30 years. He led many groundbreaking studies in exposure assessment, including the Total Exposure Assessment Methodology (TEAM) studies.
